Patrizia eventually grows so furious with Maurizio that she asks Pina to help her assassinate him. A few days later, they shoot Maurizio to death in broad daylight outside his office. That is only one reason why I have been anticipating House of Gucci - based on the book by Sara Gay Forden about Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga) and her conspiratorial crusade to take control of the fashion dynasty from her ex-husband, Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver). Rodolfo Gucci, father to Maurizio and brother to Aldo, didn’t originally want to work for Gucci under his father Guccio. He started out as an actor under the screen name Maurizio D’Ancora, for which he and his later wife and actress Alessandra would name their son. Maurizio Gucci, son of Rodolfo Gucci and grandson of patriarch Guccio Gucci, wants nothing to do with the family business or brand until he meets Patrizia. Shy, reserved and quiet-mannered, Maurizio is the only son of Rodolfo, and his mother Alessandra is not featured in the film.

Maurizio Gucci would go from reluctantly joining his family firm to ruthlessly ousting his relatives to enact the vision he was convinced would save the company. His lavish spending and lackluster management left the company in a precipitous position when he finally relinquished control. It’s fitting that Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci” has a title card that reads “inspired by the true story.” The Gucci family themselves had long been careful mythmakers and shapers of the company’s image. The first trailer for House of Gucci showcases all the glitz, glamour, and drama that the upcoming Ridley Scott film is sure to provide. In the second trailer for House of Gucci, viewers get a glimpse into Lady Gaga's portrayal of Patrizia Reggiani—and her doomed marriage to Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver). Clearly it would take acting royalty to portray a group of people considered royalty in the fashion industry and it looks like that is exactly what we are in for with the cast of House of Gucci, which hits theaters Wednesday, November 24, 2021. Arguably, his best work is when he is playing a villain, such as Scar in Disney’s original animated The Lion King in 1994, or as Hans Gruber’s brother, Simon, in Die Hard with a Vengeance the following year. Next on Irons’ agenda is a horror movie called Cello, and another biopic called Frankel about Sir Henry Cecil and his titular horse. Also known for making chart-topping hits with his band, 30 Seconds to Mars, and starring in a few blockbusters (notably Suicide Squad as The Joker and the upcoming Morbius in the title role) is Jared Leto, who looks completely unrecognizable as Maurizio Gucci’s cousin, Paolo, in House of Gucci. Ridley Scott’s film offers a dramatized version of the real-life events surrounding the murder of Maurizio Gucci, who was the head of the Gucci fashion house in the ’90s and was the grandson of founder Guccio Gucci. Gucci’s death was orchestrated by his ex-wife, Patrizia Reggiani, who hired a hit man to kill her ex-husband outside of the Milan Gucci offices. Also in the mix is Aldo’s son Paolo, brought to life by Jared Leto, whose outrageous (and extremely fun) gaudiness single-handedly earns the aforesaid “rock concert” analogy. Leto’s approach to the role instantly proves apt for Paolo, an incompetent businessman wannabe and an aspiring fashion designer with little taste and even less talent.
Aside from his family squabbles, Paolo Gucci was embroiled in other financial issues in his life. His ex-wife, Jenny Garwood, had sued him for allegedly failing to pay $505,600 in child support and he had a warrant out for his arrest for his questionable bankruptcy filing. Paolo Gucci also played a role in his father’s tax-evasion case, as he turned in information that implicated his father and led to his conviction. Aldo Gucci was also in embroiled in another public scandal in 1985 when the Gucci company sued him on charges of siphoning off millions of dollars. He was ousted from his role and his brother, Rodolfo Gucci, became chairman. Maurizio Gucci died in 1995 at the age of 46 after being shot outside his Milan office.

He left the label in 2004 and since then has launched his own Tom Ford line and is currently chairman of the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Tall, thin, blond and comfortable in the world of the wealthy — seemingly the opposite in every way of Patrizia — Paola Franchi was Maurizio’s girlfriend during the last years of his life and was living with him at his vast palazzo on Milan’s luxurious Corso Venezia at the time of his death. (Her son, Charly, who was also living there, is not included in the film.) Maurizio and Paola had known each other briefly as teenagers, meeting on the beaches of Santa Margherita, and began their relationship after reuniting in 1990 at a nightclub in St. Moritz. Patrizia had Paola thrown out the day after Maurizio was murdered, filing papers with the court mere hours after the shooting. A 2016 article in The Guardian reported that Franchi split her time between Milan and Kenya. Maurizio was acquitted of tax evasion after he was charged with forging his father’s signature on the stock certificates that transferred Rodolfo’s shares of Gucci to him following Rodolfo’s death in 1983.
The Killing Eve actress plays Italian interior designer Paola Franchi, who was dating Maurizio Gucci at the time of his death. The Marriage Story actor stars as Maurizio Gucci, the former head of the Gucci fashion house (and Patrizia's ex-husband) who was assassinated in March 1995. When Maurizio's business plans harm Gucci's firm, he seeks assistance from an equity company Investcorp, through which he hatches a scheme to acquire shares of the firm from the now-impoverished Paolo. As Aldo returns from prison and realizes what Paolo has done, Investcorp offers to buy him out, he refuses until Maurizio reveals himself as the deal's instigator, whereupon Aldo sells his shares and cuts contact with Maurizio. The screening, held at the brand-new 1,000-seat David Geffen Theater, was packed to its COVID-reduced capacity with SAG-AFTRA members and others, making it one of the first audiences to get a glimpse at the film that’s seemingly had awards buzz since it was announced. While Lady Gaga’s method turn has made headlines ahead of the film’s November 24 release (she said she spoke in her character’s Italian-accented English for nine months straight), it was Jared Leto who seemed to make the biggest impression on the Academy audience.
The former Marine and former Girls cast member has worked with many other great filmmakers including Steven Spielberg (Lincoln), Joel and Ethan Coen (Inside Llewyn Davis), and Martin Scorsese (Silence), to name a few. Driver has been nominated for acting Oscars twice (first in 2019 for BlacKkKlansman, and then for Netflix’s Marriage Story the following year), but he is most famous, of course, for playing Kylo Ren in the Star Wars movies. Huston's previous film credits include supporting roles in American Hustle and Hail, Caesar! On the small screen he had a recurring role as Richard Harrow in Boardwalk Empire and a leading role in the fourth season of Fargo. Throughout his long career, Sir Ridley Scott has worked with some of the finest actors of all time – but even by his lofty standards, the cast for his new film House of Gucci is especially star-studded.
The company also focused on removing counterfeits and cheap quality products so that Gucci could reposition as a luxury brand. Patrizia Reggiani came from a humble background before her mother married transportation magnate Fernando Reggiani, which catapulted Reggiani into a life of being a socialite. Reggiani married Maurizio Gucci in 1972 and the couple had two daughters, Alessandra and Allegra. They became a notable and globally influential couple, splitting their time between Milan and New York, where they had an apartment in the Olympic Tower.
Starting in 2006, Ridley Scott was set to direct the on-screen version of the downfall of Gucci, with Andrea Berloff writing the script, despite the Gucci family’s known disapproval. In this first iteration of the project, Leonardo DiCaprio and Angelina Jolie were in the mix to play Maurizio Gucci and Patrizia Reggiani, respectively. In 2012, Scott’s daughter Jordan took the directing reins, lassoing Penélope Cruz to play Patrizia. When Patrizia Reggiani, an outsider from humble beginnings, marries into the Gucci family, her unbridled ambition begins to unravel their legacy and triggers a reckless spiral of betrayal, d... Patrizia devises a plot to obtain controlling interest in Gucci by acquiring some of Aldo and Paolo's shares (the other 50%). She clashes with Aldo over the firm's clandestine sale of cheap "fake" Gucci products on the black market, and consults Giuseppina "Pina", a psychic, for guidance on how to manipulate Maurizio, who has little real interest in Gucci, into taking a more active role within the company.
“I said to Ridley, ‘You know, I’d love to do this, but if I do, I’d go absolutely fucking crazy,'” Leto recalled. When Aldo Gucci was ousted from the company following his tax evasion charges and allegations of siphoning money from the company, Rodolfo Gucci was named chairman in 1982. He ultimately served five-and-a-half months in prison in Florida for the crime and finished his sentence at a hallway house in West Palm Beach, Fla. Aldo Gucci opened the design house’s first store in New York that year and later expanded to locations in Beverly Hills, Chicago and Florida. Aldo Gucci was the oldest son of Guccio Gucci, who started the Gucci brand in 1921 as a saddle and leather business. She now lives in Milan and works at a costume jewelry firm as a design consultant.
Maurizio Gucci looked to Dawn Mello, then president of Bergdorf Goodman, to help revitalize the brand. With her help, Gucci brought on Richard Lambertson, who was the head of Bergdorf Goodman’s accessories department, as the design house’s new design director. Fashion designer Tom Ford was also brought on to oversee women’s ready-to-wear.
